Leading Welsh women's golfer Becky Brewerton hopes the Ryder Cup's staging in Wales can be followed by the return of the Solheim Cup to her homeland.

Europeean and United States' men will contest the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in October - the first time the event will have been held in Wales.

The women's equivalent was held at St Pierre Golf Club near Chepstow in 1996.

Brewerton said: "If I could play a Solheim Cup in Wales - I don't think it gets much better than that."

Abergele-bred Brewerton played for Europe at the 2009 event and hopes to compete at the September, 2011 tournament at Killeen Castle Ireland.

Colorado Golf Club hosts the 2013 clash and organisers in Europe started the bidding process for the 2015 event earlier this month.

Asked if she would like the Solheim Cup to return to Wales, Brewerton replied: "Yes, it would be fantastic.

"We've already seen the Solheim Cup at St Pierre, but anytime, that would be my dream as well.

"If I could play a Solheim Cup in Wales - I don't think it gets much better than that."

Brewerton was speaking in the wake of Celtic Manor owner Sir Terry Matthews casting doubt on the Welsh Open's future.

Earlier this week Matthews refused to commit to the tournament long-term.

The 2010 Ryder Cup venue's contract with the European Tour to stage the £1.8m event is due for renewal in 2014.

Matthews told BBC Sport: "I don't know if 2014 will be the last Wales Open, we'll have to look at it but our commitment is until 2014."

I'm just hoping some of the spectacular form is going to come

If the Welsh Open does not continue beyond 2014, the nation would be devoid of a top-class tournament.

The 11th Wales Open was won on Sunday by Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell.

Brewerton is currently ranked 16th on the Ladies European Tour and hopes to hit her best form for the summer's major events.

She said: "My form's not been too bad. I've been pretty steady without being spectacular. I'm just hoping some of the spectacular form is going to come now for the rest of the season.

"It would be perfect timing to get going around now.

"The US Open, British Open, Evian Masters are all coming up as well - all the big events we have seem to be quite packed together so it's a good time of the year now to start coming into form."
