Kim has been in the form of his life this season
American Ryder Cup star Anthony Kim faces a 10 to 12 week lay-off after undergoing thumb surgery on Wednesday.
The world number 11, third at the Masters in April having won in Houston the previous week, pulled out of the Players Championship on Tuesday.
Kim, 24, is certain to miss next month's US Open and may also miss the Open at St Andrews in July.
But he hopes to be fit for the Ryder Cup, which takes place at Celtic Manor in Wales from 1 to 3 October.
"While I had hoped to be able to continue to play through the injury, compensating for it was starting to cause other issues, including a sore shoulder," he said. "We had to get it fixed."
Kim is number two in the American Ryder Cup standings, with the top eight qualifying after the PGA Championship in August.
