Edberg made birdies at five of the last seven holes
Pelle Edberg carded a 65 to lie second after the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship, a week after crashing out of qualifying school.
The Swede is one stroke behind South African leader Ulrich van den Berg, who fired an eight-under-par 64.
Scot Alan McLean is the highest-placed Briton after a 67, while three-time major winner Ernie Els carded a 68.
The tournament at Leopard Creek, near Malelane in South Africa, is the first of the 2010 European Tour season.
Edberg, 30, no longer has a full Tour card, but earned a place in the event thanks to his 132nd place finish on this year's circuit.
Joint runner-up at the SAS Masters on his home soil last year, he failed to make the 72-hole cut on his 10th trip to the school and so faces an uncertain future.
Shane Lowry, who won the Irish Open as an amateur in May, carded a 67, as did fellow Irishman Damien McGrane.
