Wie only joined the LPGA this season

American star Michelle Wie won the first LPGA title of her career with victory at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico. The 20-year-old, who shot to fame at an early age, fired a final round three- under-par 69 to win by two shots from Paula Creamer in Guadalajara. Morgan Pressel, Jiyai Shin and Cristie Kerr finished a further shot behind. Wie made an LPGA cut when she was only 13 and appeared on the men's US Tour at 14, missing the cut by only one shot. She had come desperately close on a number of occasions to winning on the LPGA Tour despite suffering injuries and poor form in recent years. Wie had six runner-up finishes and six third-placed finishes prior to Sunday's victory in Mexico.

"It feels, it sounds cliche, but it feels awesome," Wie told the LPGA website after her round. "For sure, it's definitely a monkey off my back. I think that hopefully life will be a lot better, but I still have a lot of work to do. I still have a lot to improve." Wie enjoyed the traditional champion's shower as she was doused with beer by Solheim Cup team-mates Pressel and Creamer on the 18th green, and her parents BJ Bo were also on hand to celebrate. "I think it's just so awesome, seeing them on the 18th green and hugging them," said Wie. "You know, we have been through a lot as a family, and it's just so great that they are here to share my highs and to keep me up from the lows, as well." Starting the day joint leader with Kerr, Wie notched birdies on the 1st, 3rd and 11th before stumbling at the 12th with a bogey.

She held firm with five straight pars, however, before sealing the victory in style on the last, a 30-yard bunker shot landing a foot from the hole for a tap-in birdie. "I was just focusing on just not hitting anyone in the crowd," Wie said when asked about the winning shot. "It's a shot that I feel comfortable with. I just went up and walked up to it, looked at it, and hit it. I didn't give myself any time to doubt myself." LPGA spokesman David Higdon admitted Wie's victory would be a boost for the women's tour. "Literally, when Michelle Wie is atop the leaderboard it's like night and day and that's star power," said Higdon. "That's all it is. This is somebody people want to follow. You see it in her presence, the way she walks around. The way people talk to her."
