Montgomerie is currently competing in the Hong Kong Open
Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has been chosen to lead a European team against Asia in the Royal Trophy in Thailand in January 2010.
Montgomerie replaces Seve Ballesteros in the role, with the Spaniard still receiving treatment after collapsing with a brain tumour a year ago.
"It is an excellent chance for me to spend time with some key players ahead of the Ryder Cup," said Montgomerie.
"I am excited about being captain and representing Europe as a player."
Ballesteros was the original captain for the Royal Trophy, but Jose Maria Olazabal took over in January 2009 when Asia won 10-6 and now Montgomerie takes charge.
"It is best for the players to have complete certainty as to who will lead them in this great match against Asia," added Ballesteros.
"While my recovery has been very good, I am not certain that I will be ready to give our team the 110% effort it deserves.
"The role of captain is complex, difficult and demanding and I sincerely thank Colin, my very good friend, for taking this major responsibility."
