McIlroy is currently third in the Race to Dubai standings

Rory McIlroy is nine shots off the pace after hitting a disappointing opening one-over-par 73 at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai. After starting at the 10th, McIlroy went to the turn in level par but a double bogey six at the first ended his prospects of a back nine charge. Irish Open champion Shane Lowry shot a superb 66 which leaves him two shots behind leader American Nick Watney. Padraig Harrington was hit by four bogeys on his back nine in his 74. Harrington went to the turn in two under after starting at the 10th but he was unable to register another birdie as he finished the day in a share of 57th place in the 78-strong field. McIlroy is tied for 48th after the opening day although there is no cut in the limited field event. Lowry maintained his recent promising form after struggling for most of the summer following his Irish Open win by carding seven birdies and a solitary bogey in his impressive opening round. The Offaly man is level with Martin Kaymer and American Ryan Moore on six under. Tiger Woods, Anthony Kim and Paul Casey are in a group on five under.
