Ross McGowan is in pole position to win his first European Tour title after a third-round 60 at the Madrid Masters.

He ended the day on 24 under par, seven shots clear of Michael Lorenzo-Vera and Danny Willett, who share second place.

McGowan had two eagles, 10 birdies and two bogeys, but joint second-round leader Sergio Garcia bogeyed four of the last seven to fall off the pace.

McGowan's 60 is the second on the Tour in the last month after Rafael Cabrera-Bello hit one to win the Austrian Open.

Englishman McGowan was already in eighth place in the Ryder Cup points race before the tournament began and said he was not doing anything out of the ordinary.

"I can't believe it really," said the 27-year-old afterwards.

"I just played my own game and didn't think about the score until I hit the second shot to the 18th. Then I thought 'hang on - that was for 59'."

French golfer Adrien Mork hit a 59 in a European Challenger Tour event at Morocco in 2006, but the mark has yet to be achieved on the main tour.

However, world number 177 McGowan now has Ernie Els' Tour record score of -29 for 72 holes in his sights, a record set by the South African at the Johnnie Walker Classic in Australia six years ago.

Three players have scored 59 on the US PGA Tour - Al Geiberger at the Memphis Classic in 1977, Chip Beck at the Las Vegas Invitational in 1991 and David Duval at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in 1999.

Scotland's David Drysdale, who had been joint leader in Madrid with Garcia after the second round, slipped down the field after carding a 69.
