Jonathan Caldwell retains hopes of playing at the Open
|
Jonny Caldwell is in contention for a place at The Open Championship after posting a first round of three-under-par 70 in Local Final Qualifying. The Clandeboye golfer carded an eagle, four birdies and three bogeys in his 18 holes on the Barassie course in Kilmarnock, Scotland, on Monday. Ronan Rafferty has work to do however after firing a one-over-par 72 at the Gailes Links in Glasgow. The top four finishers over two rounds at each venue will play at Turnberry. Royal County Down professional Jerry Scullion appears to be out of the running after registering an eight-over 79 at the Gailes Links. David Higgins of Waterville is one under after a 70 at Gailes Links. The second round of the qualifying tournament will be played on Tuesday.
