Wilson rates his US Open chances

Mansfield golfer Oliver Wilson feels his first tournament win is just around the corner, and is targeting the US Open as a potential venue for success.

Wilson's outing at Torrey Pines last summer saw him finish 36th, and he now hopes to improve on that standing.

"I'm definitely capable of winning a major," he told BBC East Midlands Today. "It's just that I haven't really performed that well.

"My US Open last year was my best, and I was up there most of the week."

He added: "But I fell away the last few holes, and I was a little unlucky coming in."

A top 10 would be a great result for me this year

This year's tournament is at Bethpage State Park in New York, and Wilson's preparation has given him the confidence that he could emerge at the top of the pack.

"I feel like a major could be my first win, and the US Open suits me," he added.

"So fingers crossed it will be next week for my first win, but really if I can just get into contention and stick in there all week, I can just keep grinding it out for the best possible performance.

"A top 10 would be a great result for me this year."
