Victory in Kent would put Wall in the world top 50 for the first time

Anthony Wall marked his 34th birthday with a round of 69 for a share of third place after round two of the European Open at the London Club in Kent.

He ended the day alongside Christian Cevaer on seven under, one behind Jeev Milkha Singh and Michael Lorenzo-Vera.

Singh could have taken the outright lead had he not bogeyed the last hole.

But there was no disgrace in that, with sixes, sevens and eights carded at the 18th, Sergio Garcia being one of those who took six shots to end on level par.

Defending champion Ross Fisher ended his round in similar fashion to close on two over and must now wait to see if he makes the cut.

Two players who have definitely failed to reach the latter stages - both for the second time in consecutive tournaments - are Masters champion Angel Cabrera and world number five Henrik Stenson, who ended the day 12 over.

Wall's lone victory on the tour came nine years ago in South Africa, but he said he was not surprised to be up among the pace-setters.

"I've been an also-ran for a long time, but I expect to do well this week," he said.

"I've got better technique and now I'm getting older things don't bother me quite as much.

"But you don't win unless you putt well for four days and to be honest I've only done that once or twice in my life."
