Padraig Harrington struggled to a second-round 74 to fall 12 shots off the pace at the Buick Invitational.

The Open and USPGA champion bogeyed two of his first four holes at Torrey Pines and ended his round with a one-over-par total of 145.

The Irishman is playing his first event since surgery to remove non-malignant melanomas from near his right eye.

Luke Donald is the best-placed European, a round of 69 leaving him six behind leader Camillo Villegas (70).

A winner of two events last year, including the Tour Championship, the Colombian finished on 11-under, one ahead of American John Rollins, whose brilliant eight-under 64 would have been even better but for a bogey on the final green.

With a strong wind blowing, Villegas missed four consecutive fairways from the fourth hole, but never did worse than par.

"Obviously, you want to hit a lot of fairways and try to keep it as simple as you can," he said.

"I did completely the opposite so then you've got to work hard, be creative and get it up-and-down somehow, which I did."

San Diego local boy Charley Hoffman made a late run with birdies on three of the final five holes for a six-under 66, leaving him four shots back in third place.

Aaron Baddeley and Davis Love III, who started the day two shots off the pace, both struggled and fell back into the pack while Phil Mickelson, who has won this event three times, carded four birdies and as many bogeys in an even-par 72 to leave him at two-under.
