Colombia's Camilo Villegas maintained his one-stroke lead after the second round of the BMW Championship in St Louis, despite a charge from Jim Furyk.
Villegas followed up his opening 65 with a 66 to stand on nine under par.
But American Furyk made the biggest move with a stunning 62 that took him into second place, one shot back.
Spain's Sergio Garcia finished round two on four under after a second 68, the highlight of which was a hole in one on the par-three third.
"I've had seven but that's my first one in competition as an amateur or professional," said Garcia.
"That was very exciting for me. I've been close many times but you don't expect to make it all the way from 205 yards."
American Ryder Cup player Phil Mickelson lies fourth after a second-round 65 left him on seven under par, with the third round still to be played on Saturday.
The first day of the event was washed out after the remnants of Hurricane Gustav swept across Missouri, leaving organisers hopeful of playing 36 holes on Saturday to get back on track for a Sunday finish.
