As it happened - USPGA Championship

Robert Karlsson (68), Jeev Milkha Singh (68) and Andres Romero (after 16 holes) lead at two under after the first day of the USPGA at Oakland Hills, Michigan.

Sergio Garcia (69) is in a group on one under, while double Open champion Padraig Harrington opened with three straight birdies but ends one over after a 71.

Phil Mickelson took 70 but Colin Montgomerie opened with a six-over 76 and Lee Westwood carded 77.

Play was delayed for almost an hour and a half because of bad weather halfway through the round.

0145: Play is called off for the night with some of the field still to complete their first rounds. Back with you again on Friday. G'night.

0120: Justin Rose and Ian Poulter, possibly because they're such good mates, both drop shots to slide to three over. Rose at the 16th, Poulter at 14.

0103: Padraig Harrington pars the last for a one-over 71, while former Open champion Ben Curtis comes home in 40 for a 73 and Darren Clarke bogeys the last three holes for 75.

0058: JB Holmes drops out of the lead with a bogey at the 6th, his 15th.

0054: Ernie Els steadies his ship after a double bogey at the 14th with a par on 15 for two over. Justin Rose slips back again with a bogey on 14 to also go to two over.

0050: American JB Holmes and Argentine Andres Romero edge to join Karlsson and Singh at two under after birdies at the 5th (his 14th) and 12th respectively. Padraig Harrington drops a shot at 17 to slip back to one over.

0041: One-time two-shot leader Retief Goosen is sliding back at a rate of knots and goes to level after 13 following a second straight bogey.

0033: Mark Calcavecchia drops back with a bogey on the 5th but is replaced on one under by JB Holmes who birdies the 4th. Ian Poulter birdies the long 12th to inch back to two over.

0030: The weather interruption has done Darren Clarke no favours as he bogeys 16 and 17 to slide back to four over. Vijay Singh remains four over after stringing together six straight pars after the turn.

0025: Mark Calcavecchia and JB Holmes have crept up into the group on one under after 13 holes.

0018: Padraig Harrington tidies up for a par on the 15th to stay level but Retief Goosen drops a shot at the 12th to drop back to one under. Justin Rose birdies the long 12th to edge back to one over.

0013: Ernie Els pars the hole he left unfinished and is level par through 12. Jonathan Byrd resumes with a bogey to slip back to one under after 10.

0005: Play has resumed after a delay of one hour 25 minutes for bad weather. Retief Goosen will begin again on two under through 11 with Jonathan Byrd on two under after nine. Brian Gay is one under after 16 with Brandt Snedeker, Mark Calcavecchia, Michael Allen and Andres Romero also one under.

2355: The skies are clearing over Oakland Hills but no sign of play yet. Boo.

2332: Play is expected to resume shortly after 2345 BST. Good.

2255: Let's wrap up some other scores from players still to finish, shall we. Andres Romero is one under after 10, Angel Cabrera is level after 14, as is Ben Curtis.

Ernie Els is level after 11, Darren Clarke is two over after 15, John Daly is two over after 13, Justin Rose is two over after 11, US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger is three over through 14 and Ian Poulter is three over after 10 alongside Mike Weir.

Vijay Singh is four over after 13, Kenny Perry is four over after 11, Fred Couples is five over after 11, Nick Dougherty is six over through 14 and Steve Webster is seven over after 16.

2235: A big hooter squawks out over Oakland Hills signalling a delay for bad weather. There are thunderstorms in the area and the players are hauled off the course.

"Anagram of Colin Montgomerie - 'I'm one gloom cretin'. Anagram of Padraig Harrington - 'Art: going hard, in par'."
Dave Greasby, Wirral, via text.

2223: After all that, Padraig Harrington birdies 14 to get back to level. Jonathan Byrd bogeys the 9th, while Brian Gay also slips back.

2220: Confusion reigns over Padraig Harrington's score - he dropped a shot at the long 12th and followed it up with a bogey on 13 so he's one over.

"Ernington Els? One learns every day. Is it Tigerama Woods then?"
Thanks_a_lot_BBC on 606

Yep, and it's Fredford Funk.

2210: Ernington Els remains level through 11 holes. Andres Romero drops a shot at the tough 9th to go back to one under.

2205: Jonathan Byrd birdies the 17th, his eighth, to reach three under.

"Spent tonight (in Warsaw) glued to for news of the golf, with the windows wide open, listening to Iron Maiden in the Gwardia Stadium FIVE miles away.... AWESOME does not get close!!"
Ramilas1 on 606

Cast iron (geddit?) proof that golf IS rock'n'roll.

2200: Ian Poulter reaches the turn in 38 for three over, while his pal Justin Rose takes 37.

2155: Padraig Harrington takes five at the long 12th after finding bushes with his drive. He slides back to level par. Darren Clarke drops a shot at the 13th to go back to two over.

2150: Retief Goosen drops a shot at the 9th to slip back to two under. Darren Clarke is one over through 12 after firing back-to-back birdies, while Argentine Andres Romero holes a good one to get to two under after eight.

2145: Ben Curtis drops another one at the 3rd, his 12th, to slip to one under. Ernie Els makes a good par putt on nine to reach the turn level. Padraig Harrington has some problems on the 12th and is forced to take a drop out of bushes on the right.

"I love this time of the golf season in Ryder Cup Year - the speculation and battle for places gives a new edge. Stuck in the middle of Poland, glued to for news of the Europeans, and especially the Irish."
Lodz_Lady on 606

2135: No sooner does Ben Curtis grab a share of the lead than he makes a complete hash of the 2nd, his 11th, to make a bogey and slide back to two under.

2120: Retief Goosen drops a shot at the 8th to join Ben Curtis in the lead.

2105: Retief Goosen looks super-cool as he creeps to four under with another birdie on the 7th. Playing partner Justin Rose drops another one after leaving his greenside bunker shot short to drop to two over.

Simultaneously, former Open champion Ben Curtis birdies the 1st, his 10th, to get the three under. I reckon Curtis will win another major one day. He's a hot putter and under-rated.

"Harrington is in the mood. I think he BELIEVES he's going to win this weekend, Saturday and Sunday last week at Firestone set him up, no pressure, like practice for the PGA.

The guy with the most fairways hit percentage should win this weekend, all Harrington has to do is stay in the Zone. Mickleson and Harrington final pairing on Sunday, with Furyk, Karlsson and Garcia breathing down their necks. Karlsson has the game to win a major, but he needs to do it soon."

2050: Justin Rose drains a monster for birdie to get back to one over after six. Vijay Singh also picks up a shot at the 8th to edge back to three over, while Padraig Harrington drops another to reach the turn in one-under 34.

2040: Last week's winner of the WGC event, Vijay Singh, is three over after seven holes and is struggling with his putter. Ernie Els birdies the 6th to get back to level par.

Justin Rose, who needs a good finish to book his automatic Ryder Cup spot, opens with a birdie but drops three shots in the next four holes for two over.

"Harrington will be buying the drinks come sunday!!"
Grumpyoldgirl on 606

2030: Ernie Els drops a shot at the 5th to go to one over. Ian Poulter, in a very ordinary blue shirt and white strides, misses a short birdie putt on the 4th and stays two over, while Darren Clarke is three over after eight holes following three bogeys, one double and two birdies.

2015: Padraig Harrington drops a shot at the 7th after sliding a short one past on the right lip to slip back to join the large group on two under. Retief Goosen, meanwhile, birdies the 4th to take the lead at three under.

Ian Poulter begins with two bogeys.

1955: Hunter Mahan, the chap who recently said players were treated like "slaves" at the Ryder Cup, despite never having been there, cards an opening 81. Oops.

Fellow American Kenny Perry, another man who has been no stranger to controversy this year after opting against playing in the Open, double bogeys the 2nd but birdies the third for one over.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell, meanwhile, signs for a four-over 74, while Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez takes 73.

1945: Retief Goosen moves to join the group on two under with a birdie at the second. Also on -2 are Robert Karlsson (68), JM Singh (68), Charlie Wi, Heath Slocum, Brian Gay, Angel Cabrera and Ben Curtis.

1935: Heath Slocum bogeys the 6th to slip back to two under, leaving Padraig Harrington on the lead. There's a theme here.

"I think the winning score this week will be a couple over par, which makes Harrington's start extra special. Come on Padraig, keep it going!!"
Hogie on 606

1925: Padraig Harrington dribbles his eight footer right to miss out on a fourth straight birdie. He leads with Heath Slocum at three under, while Robert Karlsson and Jeev Milkha Singh are in the clubhouse on two under.

1910: Phil Mickelson ends with a level-par 70 - could this be the week that Lefty finally wins his first major since the 2006 Masters and makes some progress eroding Tiger Woods's lead in the rankings?

"I would have taken even par at the start of the day, certainly," said Mickelson.

1900: Double Open champion Padraig Harrington begins with two birdies and then hits the pin with his tee shot on the short 3rd. He's left with a couple of feet for another birdie.

1850: American Heath Slocum takes the outright lead at three under with a birdie at the 11th, his second and an eagle at the 12th.

1845: England's Simon Dyson and Australian Geoff Ogilvy both end three over. Phil Mickelson is three under for his back nine - after starting from the 10th - with one hole left. He's one under.

Sergio Garcia reflected on his 69, saying: "I putted good and I scrambled good and I made some good pars when I was in trouble. Under par on this course, the way it's playing, is not bad."

1835: England's Paul Casey was another one out early and he shot a two-over 72, while Scotland's Alastair Forsyth took 73. The super in-form Robert Karlsson had quite a remarkable round - he kicked off with a double bogey before making five birdies in his next seven holes.

One more birdie and bogeys at 14 and 15 gave him his 68. He might not be what you might call a "character" but he will be very welcome on the European Ryder cup team.

1830: Welcome to the text commentary for the 2008 USPGA at Oakland Hills. There's been plenty of early action out on the course, but like TV, I'll give you a quick round up before we get to the live stuff.

Sweden's Robert Karlsson and India's Jeev Milkha Singh have set the clubhouse lead at two under after rounds of 68. Sergio Garcia ended one back, while Phil Mickelson is also one under after 16. Rising US star Anthony Kim fired a level-par 70.

But at the other end of the spectrum there's not so good news for some of the European contingent. Colin Montgomerie ended six over, Ross Fisher was seven over, Lee Westwood is seven over though 16 holes and Oliver Wilson is six over after 12.

That doesn't bode very well for Monty's chances of catching Nick Faldo's eye for a Ryder Cup wildcard, does it?
