Norman struggles at senior event

Australia's Greg Norman
Norman has yet to win a tournament on the senior circuit

Greg Norman could not recapture the form he showed last week at the Open as he ended the first round of the Senior Open at Royal Troon on four over.

The 53-year-old led the Open going into the final round, but eventually ended in a tie for third behind Padraig Harrington after a final-round slump.

And after his first round in Scotland, Norman said: "Things weren't going my way early on. I had to hang in there."

Meanwhile, Bruce Vaughan and Eduardo Romero shared the lead at three under.

Vaughan could have been clear of the field, but a double bogey at the 6th and a triple bogey at the 12th spoiled a scorecard which also contained eight birdies.

"It was either feast or famine," said Vaughan.

"Outside of those two holes though, it was a good round."

Norman was one of the stories of the week at last week's Open, but his form at Troon for the senior version of the championship was well short of his showing at Birkdale.

"The ball just wasn't rolling my way," he added.

There's more than one round in a golf tournament

"I got to the first tee and I never played this golf course in this wind before. I didn't feel that confident with some of the tee shots, and I hit it into a couple of divot holes which didn't make me feel good on the first few holes.

"But there's more than one round in a golf tournament."

While Norman struggled, his playing partner Tom Watson missed only one fairway in a bogey-free 70 to end on one under, alongside Germany's Bernhard Langer.

Craig Stadler hit a hole-in-one at the "Postage Stamp" eighth hole - the shortest in the history of the Open - and won 123 bottles of wine, one for every yard, as a prize from a sponsor.

Sam Torrance is two over and Ian Woosnam four over while Sandy Lyle - who ended his Open challenge after just 10 holes - also ended on four over despite three birdies in the last four holes.
