Defending champion Padraig Harrington is in contention to retain the Open but Graeme McDowell fired a nightmare 80 in Saturday's third round at Birkdale.
Harrington carded a two-over-par 72 in strong winds to lie in a tie for second on four over and two behind leader Greg Norman of Australia.
Portrush player McDowell had three double-bogeys on his card, including the first and 18th holes.
McDowell has slipped to joint 35th on 12 over.
The Ulsterman also had five bogeys as his bid for the Open ended.
Harrington suffered a double-bogey five on the 12th and four bogeys but in an impressive display in tough conditions he also picked up four birdies.
Korea's KJ Choi is also on four over but Harrington will be paired with two-times Open champion Norman in the final round.
