Wilson hoping for Open 'miracle'

Mansfield golfer Oliver Wilson says he is hoping for a 'miracle' victory at this year's Open at Royal Birkdale.

Wilson has only played in the Open once before but has finished second seven times on the European Tour.

He told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I can't wait. I feel pretty comfortable here and my game's in good shape.

"Hopefully I can pull off some kind of miracle. I genuinely think we're going to have a British winner, maybe even an English winner. I'd love it to be me."

Wilson's chances of victory are increased by the absence of Tiger Woods but that is not of concern to the 27-year-old.

"It doesn't matter if he's playing or not. To win an event like this you've got to beat the best players in the world," he added.

"Tiger is the best player but there are a lot of good players out there to beat.

"If you can handle the occasion, the weather and everything that comes along with it then you deserve it, and I don't think there's a player that would argue that. "

Wilson will tee off his first round at 0747 BST on Thursday alongside Geoff Ogilvy and Davis Love III.
