Monty suggests four-day Ryder Cup

Colin Montgomerie

Colin Montgomerie says the Ryder Cup should be extended from its usual three days to four.

Montgomerie said that with courses getting longer and weather becoming less predictable, the time has come to give the players an extra day.

"To get everything done in three days isn't necessary. We seem to be rushing around and for what reason?" he said.

"It's almost got to that stage where two rounds a day over three days is just a rush."

Montgomerie was speaking after his opening round at the Wales Open, being staged at Celtic Manor, which will host the Ryder Cup in 2010.

At one stage, play had to be stopped at one stage due to fog and as the venue has a history of bad weather, Montgomerie said switching the Ryder Cup to a four-day tournament would make even more sense.

"There is a river here and the temperature between rivers and land cause fog," said Montgomerie.

To get people around twice in places that are this vast and this large is getting harder

Colin Montgomerie

"We risked it in Ireland where we were close to a delay and we just got away with it. There could be delays here and we pray him upstairs is good to us.

"To get people around twice in places that are this vast and this large is getting harder and it would make sense to play it over four days.

"But I think everyone would benefit from a longer tournament, advertisers, supporters and the media so it should be possibility."
