Paul Eales says measuring devices will not take the skill out of golf (Getty Images)

Former European Tour golfer Paul Eales has given his backing to the use of electronic rangefinders at PGA events.
The Professional Golfers' Association has approved the use of hand-held technology following a trial at last year's PGA Fourball Championship.
It is hoped the devices, which calculate distances accurately, will speed up play and cut backlogs.
Eales told BBC Radio Lancashire: "If it makes golf quicker it's got to be good. Five hour rounds are too long."
He continued: "It brings that information to you in an instant rather than having to work it out through pacing or getting the yardage book out," he added.

"It doesn't hit the shot for you, it doesn't tell you what club to use

The move has not gone down well with some traditionalists but Eales, who is also a summariser for BBC Five Live, said golfers can choose not to use them.
"It doesn't hit the shot for you, it doesn't tell you what club to use or how high the slope is, the conditions, the wind or the fairway. You still have to work all that out for yourself."
The devices are to be allowed in all PGA events including the Irish PGA Championship, the Scottish PGA Championship and the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship.
