A double bogey at the last cost Tiger Woods the lead on the opening day of his Target World Challenge event.
Tournament host Woods was in charge at five under par after birdies at the first, second, fifth, 10th and 11th.
But his approach at the 18th found a small creek and his chip following a penalty drop left him with an 8ft bogey putt which he rolled past the hole.
Jim Furyk (four under 68) leads by a shot. Colin Montgomerie is last after a disastrous round of 80 in California.
Woods, back in action after three months off, dropped into a share of second with Henrik Stenson, Zach Johnson and Rory Sabbatini.
"It's frustrating the way it ended because it was a good round of golf," he said.
"It could have really realistically been seven under par without being all that stressed out. I ended up at three under par.
"I've got a lot of work to do the next three days, but first round back, I'm very pleased at how consistent I was.
"I obviously have to clean up a little bit around the greens, make sure my level of pitching gets a little more sound. But I was surprised at how quickly I got into the flow of the round."
Open champion Padraig Harrington is joint fifth in the 16-man field after a 71.
Britain's Paul Casey and Lee Westwood are a shot further back, tied with Vijay Singh, Steve Stricker and Niclas Fasth.
Luke Donald had a two-over round of 74.
