Angel Cabrera birdied the final hole to win the Singapore Open by a single stroke from Vijay Singh.
Singh had started the day six shots off Cabrera's lead and drew level with the US Open champion with his own birdie at the last in a round of 67.
Cabrera was never at his best but he dug deep on the 18th to sink his only birdie of the day for victory.
England's Lee Westwood faded on the back nine to finish seven off the lead in fifth after a 74.
Westwood was within two strokes of Cabrera after consecutive birdies at the 10th and 11th but five bogeys in the final seven holes ended his hopes.
Cabrera's 72 gave him a winning score of eight under, with reigning champion Adam Scott five shots back in third.
The key shot for Cabrera was his second shot into the last that landed within 20 feet of the pin and left him two putts for victory.
Scott's challenge for a third consecutive win in Singapore never really materialised as he shot four birdies and four bogeys in a level-par round of 71.
"It was a very tough day, very windy, but I did what I needed to do to get the win," said Cabrera, who said he knew Singh was breathing down his neck.
"I knew he was putting up a good round and he was playing well.
"But at the end it was up to me and I knew that if I played well over the last few holes, it was going to be my tournament.
"Maybe I get more focus on tough courses. I like tough courses, I like challenges and I like playing them."
Phil Mickelson slumped to a 79 and said he was still suffering from the effects of the forest fires near his home in California.
"I've been losing my voice this last week with the ash from the fires in California and I kept expecting it to go away and it never did," he said.
"On Friday I was up all night struggling but I had some great help from the doctors here and I felt much better today after some antibiotics. I hope to be fine in another day or two."
