Jerry Kelly fired a hole-in-one as he claimed a one-shot lead after the third round of the Verizon Heritage.
Kelly was two behind Els when his four iron at the 200-yard fourth bounced once, hit the flag and dropped in.
The American carded a 67, a round also containing five birdies and three bogeys, to end up on 13 under, one ahead of Els and Kevin Na.
Boo Weekley is alone on 11 under while Masters champion Zach Johnson is in a group of five players on nine under.
Els had a tough day on the South Carolina course, carding a 71 after a round that opened with a double bogey.
The South African, who missed the cut at last week's Masters in Augusta, fought back with birdies at three, eight and 10.
He followed a bogey at the 11th with a birdie at 13 but bogeys at 16 and 17 dropped him back and it took a 15-foot birdie putt at the last hole just to move level with Na, who shot a 66.
"I feel a little disappointed about the round," said Els, the world number five.
"I just didn't quite play the way I wanted to. Thank goodness I didn't shoot myself totally out of it but it was a tough day."
