Four-time champion Tiger Woods was far from perfect but still shot 73 despite finishing bogey, bogey.

"I don't feel I've driven myself out of it as even par is going to be in the hunt tomorrow. If I can get out and shoot a 68 I'll be right back in it."
Defending champion Phil Mickelson is determined to look on the bright side after a round of 76, which looked a lot worse at one stage before it became clear how tough the course was playing.

"I have to try and get something going and by Sunday get it back to level par. It'll be a hell of a thing to do but it's back to the drawing board, basically."
Ernie Els is rather more accepting of his fate after slumping to a six-over 78.

"It is a dream come true for me. When I was growing up I always wanted to play the Masters Tournament. I've done it today."
Jeev Milkha Singh becomes the first Indian to play in the Masters. And to cap it all, he leads on his own for a spell.

"You aren't going to get a lot of rounds in the 60s in this wind."
Prophet and former champion Tom Watson gets it right once again. Only Rose and Wetterich out of a field of 97, 96 if you factor in Ian Woosnam's late withdrawal, break 70.
