Paula Creamer shot a round of 67 to join Lorena Ochoa at the top of the leaderboard after the second round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Bidding to become the first American winner of a women's major since 1999, 20-year-old Creamer is tied with Mexican Ochoa on four under par 140.

Ochoa will take over from Annika Sorenstam as world number one if she holds on to win the tournament.

Scotland's Catriona Matthew shot a 73 to move to joint sixth on one under.

Norway's Suzann Pettersen, who was runner-up to Ochoa at last week's Safeway International in Arizona, had a 69 and was in joint third place on three under with overnight leader, South Korean Shi Hyun Ahn (73).

Another South Korean, five-times major winner Se Ri Pak, is in sole possession of fifth place on two under 142 after shooting a second round 70.

Swede Sorenstam's chances of victory receded after she followed up an opening round 75 with a 76 on Friday.

Considering I dropped so many shots I am very happy with my position

"I'm like sparkling water without the fizz," said the three-times former winner.

"I gave 100 percent, but what can you do? I just have to hope that it is better over the weekend."

Creamer sunk five birdies in a flawless round to put her in contention while Ochoa, looking for her 11th career title and a long-awaited first major, had an up-and-down day.

She mixed five birdies with two bogeys and a double-bogey at the 15th, her sixth hole, where she drove into trees and put her third in a bunker.

"Considering I dropped so many shots I am very happy with my position," she said.

England's Laura Davies was in the top 20 after a 73 for three-over-par 147, while Wales' Becky Morgan made the cut on five over after a 75.

Scot Janice Moodie had a 72 - but it was not enough to recover from an opening 83 and she missed the cut.

But compatriot Matthew, who opened with a 70, had a mixed bag with five bogeys, four birdies and a number of vital par saves to stay in contention.

"I got out of position a few times, but I feel pretty good to still be under par at this stage," she admitted.
