Simon Dyson launched his defence of the Indonesia Open title with an opening 70 to lie five shots behind Chawalit Plaphol after a disrupted first round.
Starting at the 10th, Englishman Dyson claimed two birdies in his first three holes and went to three under with a birdie four at the 1st.
But bogeys at the 2nd and the 6th pegged him back to one under.
Plaphol of Thailand rattled off six birdies in a flawless round to lead Finland's Mikko Ilonen by one shot.
Denmark's Mads Vibe-Hastrup and Shiv Kapur of India are a shot further behind.
However, 36 players have yet to finish their opening round after play was suspended because of heavy rain and lightning.
Korea's Park Jun-woon was handily placed on four under after 12 holes when play was halted.
Dyson, who enjoyed his first European Tour victory in Jakarta last year, was far from pleased with his final scorecard.
"I played miles better than one under," said the 29-year-old from York. "I birdied two of my first three holes and then lipped out at the next two.
"It was disappointing really as I played lovely. It's a course where sometimes you don't get your rewards."
