Swede Pelle Edberg fired a 65 to lead by one shot after two rounds of the European Open at the K Club in Dublin.
Edberg, ranked 460th in the world, is eight under par with Colin Montgomerie and Niclas Fasth both on seven under.
Montgomerie shot a six-under-par 64 to equal the best round of the tournament so far and is well placed to better his third place finish at the French Open.
David Frost and Simon Khan are six under but first-round leader Maarten Lafeber fell back to four under.
The Dutchman followed his opening 64 with a round of 72 on Friday.
Irish Open champion Padraig Harrington lies one under and Ryder Cup team-mate David Howell also made the cut on one over.
US Open champion Angel Cabrera will also play the last 36 holes as he is level par, but among those to miss the cut were Paul McGinley, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam.
Montgomerie insisted he was back to his best after carding his round of 64 and the 44-year-old hopes that he can end a barren spell of 19 months without a victory.
"I didn't play this well when I won the 2005 Order of Merit. This is a new era for me and I'm looking forward to it," he said. "A win would mean that much more to me.
"There will be a time when it's my last one, but I do hope it hasn't happened and I'd like to emulate Des Smyth (the Tour's oldest winner at 49) and win in my late 40's."
