Mickelson to play at Loch Lomond

Mickelson will line up at Loch Lomond pending his wrist injury
Phil Mickelson and US Open champion Angel Cabrera will lead a strong field in the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond the week before the Open at Carnoustie.

World number two Mickelson will make his fifth trip to the event provided he recovers from a wrist injury.

"I like to compete the week before a major. Going to the Scottish Open also helps me acclimatise," said Mickelson.

"I'm well aware it's an inland course but I'm sure I'll get the chance to play some links golf around the event."

Mickelson suffered the wrist injury practising for the US Open and in addition to missing the cut at Oakmont has pulled out of a tournament either side.

His best finish at Loch Lomond was seventh in 2000, while a week after missing the cut in 2004 he came within a stroke of the play-off in the Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The other world top-20 players set for Loch Lomond are two-time winner Ernie Els, Luke Donald, Retief Goosen, Sergio Garcia and Trevor Immelman.

Garcia and Donald join Ryder Cup team-mates Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal and Lee Westwood.

The week will also see Spain's Pablo Martin play in Europe as a professional for the first time.

At the Portuguese Open in April, the 21-year-old Martin became the first amateur to win in the Tour's history.

He then qualified for the US Open and finished in a tie for 30th spot.

Cabrera will play his first event since winning the US Open when he tees up at the European Open at the K Club in Ireland next week.

The Argentine beat Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk by one shot to clinch his maiden major at Oakmont earlier this month.

The Scottish Open takes place from 12-15 July at Loch Lomond.
