USA 9-18 EUROPE, Oakland Hills, Michigan

In a triumph for team spirit over individual brilliance, Europe recorded their largest ever victory amid euphoric scenes at Oakland Hills.

United States skipper Hal Sutton's baffling decision to pair Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, hardly the best of friends, in the Friday fourballs and foursomes was typical of his muddled leadership.

Woods and Mickelson, second and fourth in the world at the time, lost both their matches on the opening day as Europe surged into a 6-1 lead.

The hosts had reduced the lead to four after Saturday's morning fourballs, with Woods and new partner Chris Riley thumping Darren Clarke and Ian Poulter 4&3.

However, any hope of an American comeback was virtually snubbed out in the afternoon foursomes, with Europe winning three of the four matches to extend their overall lead to six points.

Irish duo Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley delivered the biggest blow, crushing Woods and Davis Love 4&3.

The Americans needed the spirit of Brookline in the final day's singles, but Europe's players kept their nerve and condemned their opponents to their biggest loss on home soil.

Sergio Garcia disposed of Mickelson 3&2 and Lee Westwood defeated Kenny Perry 1 up before Colin Montgomerie, in only the sixth match out, delivered the coup de grace against David Toms.

Europe's phlegmatic captain Bernhard Langer withdrew as the celebrations grew more raucous, but he had proven himself a great leader in the heat of battle.
