Hole 18, The Hooker's Graveyard
Hole 18
Uphill and usually into the wind, this taxing hole will hopefully be the scene of some thrilling finishes over the Ryder Cup weekend.

The long-hitters can cut off some of the corner of this dogleg right, although there is a cluster of bunkers to make them think.

More sand right of the green, but it is the water on the left which gives the closing hole its name and guarantees drama a-plenty - especially when everything is on the line.

YOUR K CLUB EXPERIENCES AND COMMENTS

When watching the pros playing the 18th it is easy to believe that this is an easy hole. For the big hitters, the green is certainly reachable in two shots.

But most Irish golfing enthusiasts will hope that if Darren Clarke comes down the 18th in one of the final matches he won't have to rely on lady luck to help him out as he did a few years back. That was when his second shot looked bound for the water but rolled onto the rocks, bounced three or four times like a pinball and came to a rest on the fringe of the green. Please Darren, this feat is unlikely to ever happen again! John McHenry, K Club director of golf

Recently I played in Padraig Harrington's Golf Classic at the K Club. It was the 31 July 2006, my 37th birthday. We were playing from the green stakes. On the 18th hole I drove over the bunkers to the right and was in the rough. One of my playing partners Paul Kelly drove his ball beside me. We both hit five irons for the second shot and both made the green. One other team member was out of the hole.

Paul had a 12ft putt up the green and I had a 20ft putt down the hill with a 4-5ft break. Paul two-putted for a birdie and I made mine for an eagle.

This gave us 90 points for the round. We had won the competition on the back nine. It was a great eagle and a great birthday present! Chris Kelly, K Club member
