Will MacKenzie tied a PGA Tour record with three eagles in one round to take a one-shot lead after 18 holes of the Reno-Tahoe Open on Thursday.
As well as the three eagles, the 31-year-old American carded six birdies and three bogeys in a career-best nine-under 63 at the Montreux course.
MacKenzie's remarkable round was only one shot outside the tournament record set by Bill Glasson last year.
One shot behind MacKenzie is 19-year PGA Tour veteran Bob Estes.
Rich Beem, winner of the 2002 USPGA Championship, was among a group of four tied for third after a 66. Also at six under were fellow Americans John Cook and Nick
Watney, plus David McKenzie of Australia.
Former world number one Nick Price of Zimbabwe opened with a 71 while American Brandt Jobe, the highest-ranked player in the field at 65, returned a 70.
Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell shot a three-under 69, while England's Brian Davis posted a one-under 71.
