The best golfer of his - and perhaps any - generation, Tiger Woods is one of the world's most famous sports stars.
Ryder Cup caps: 4 (1997, 1999 winners, 2002, 2004)
Record: W7, H2, L11
Position qualified: 1st
World ranking: 1
Dominant in strokeplay and fabulously rich as a result, there is one blot on Woods' copybook - his Ryder Cup record.
He has played in every possible match in his five previous appearances but has won only eight points and has never looked comfortable in the team format.
But Woods is too good to disappoint forever and his 2006 form - two majors, five other wins - has been superb.
Having won 12 majors on his own, the world number one's biggest problem in Ryder Cup play appears to have been finding the right partner - he has tried 10.
But Woods is expected to be paired with the steady Jim Furyk in Ireland and their partnership seemed to work just fine at last year's Presidents Cup.
Did you know? Tiger Woods, whose real first name is Eldrick, putted against actor/comedian Bob Hope on American television aged only two. He was first featured in US magazine Golf Digest aged five.
