Norway's Marius Thorp and Italian Edoardo Molinari will fight it out for the Silver Medal awarded to the leading amateur at the Open Championship.
Thorp, who qualified for Hoylake by winning the European amateur title last year, carded a second consecutive 71 for a two-under-par halfway total.
Molinari, who turns professional on Monday, birdied three of the last four holes for a 70 and lies one shot back.
France's Julien Guerrier and England's Danny Denison both missed the cut.
British Amateur champion Guerrier, 21, finished three over par after a 75 while Leeds' Denison, 21, struggled to a 76 to finish 12 over.
