American JJ Henry moved into a two-shot lead after three rounds of the Buick Championship in Connecticut.
Henry, 31, fired a 63 for 11 under, with compatriot Harrison Frazar in second after a round of 65.
Columbia's rookie Camilo Villegas (66) and former US Amateur champion Ryan Moore (67) were on eight under.
American Steve Flesch (64), South African Trevor Immelman (68) and Australian Peter Lonard (70) were one shot further back.
Henry could leap from 26th to sixth in the United States Ryder Cup standings by taking the title.
"It was one of those days I thought I was capable of at the
start of the week," Henry said.
"I got hot with the putter today and gave myself a lot of birdie chances.
"I didn't hit it real close but my speed on the greens was good all day. I'm going try to continue what I'm doing tomorrow and just enjoy the process."
Swede Mathias Gronberg moved into contention for a first US Tour win with a 65 for six under, but countryman Carl Pettersson fell out of the running with a three-over 73 for level par. And England's Brian Davis carded 69 for one under.
