South Korea's Shi Hyun Ahn got the better of the tricky winds to hold a one-shot lead at the first round of the Wegmans LPGA in Rochester, New York.
Ahn, the 2004 LPGA Rookie of the Year, shot a 65 for a narrow advantage over US rookie Brittany Lang.
Starting on the back nine, the 21-year-old put herself in a good position with five birdies in six holes around the turn.
Wales' Becky Morgan was the leading British player after a level-par 72.
Ahn's only LPGA title came in the CJ Nine Bridges Classic in 2003 while her best finish of 2006 is a tie for fifth in the McDonald's LPGA Championship earlier this month.
"I think I can say I'm a good player against the wind," she said after her bogey-free round.
"I could have done better at McDonald's but I came up short. Now I'm getting better, and have better confidence in my shots."
