Wie fails to make Casio Open cut

Wie has missed the cut in the six men's events she has played

Teenager Michelle Wie failed in her bid to match her male counterparts after missing the cut by one stroke at the Casio World Open in Japan.

The 16-year-old had been on target after a first-round 73 but, after bogeying her final two holes on Friday, carded a 75 and finished four over.

The American is only the second woman to play in a Japanese men's event - Swede Sophie Gustafson played in 2003.

Wie has started six men's professional events but has yet to make the cut.

"Obviously, I'm very disappointed," said Wie. "I played as well as I could. I tried my best but things just didn't work out.

"The bogeys I made were pretty stupid. I wish I could've prevented that but obviously it was not meant to be.

"Not making the cut here has not made me not want to play in men's events. Hopefully, I can learn from the mistakes I made here and come back here."

The missed cut was all the more agonising as Wie had a six-foot putt to take her into day three, which she failed to hole.

"I hit the putt the way I wanted to," she said. "It just didn't break the way I thought it would."

Wie was bidding to join Babe Zaharias in the record books by making the cut on one of the major men's tours.

Zaharias made the 36-hole cut at the 1945 Los Angeles Open.

"I was thinking about the cut a little bit and I had really bad luck on the last two holes," said Wie. "One shot after another just didn't work out."
