Clarke pulls out of Volvo Masters

Darren Clarke is returning home to be with his sick wife
Darren Clarke withdrew from the Volvo Masters at Valderrama on Friday to be with his sick wife Heather.

The Ryder Cup star from Northern Ireland announced he was heading home after a second-round 75 left him nine over at the halfway stage.

"Valderrama is not the course to be playing when your mind is elsewhere," said the 1998 Volvo Masters winner.

"Unless your mind is totally on what you are doing here, the results can be professionally soul destroying."

He added: "Volvo are such great sponsors of our tour that I didn't want to let them down by pulling out before their flagship event started, even though I knew I was going to struggle.

"I have decided I will be better off at home."

Clarke has already withdrawn from several tournaments and curtailed his schedule to be with his wife who has been fighting cancer for some time.
