Westwood defies Sawgrass delays

Lee Westwood defied further disruptions at Sawgrass on Saturday to take a share of the clubhouse lead in the weather-hit Players Championship.

The Englishman added a 69 to Thursday's 65 to reach 10 under par alongside unheralded American Joe Durant.

Also on 10 under is Steve Jones, although he was only halfway through his round when play was suspended.

Luke Donald is one shot further back after 31 holes, while Zach Johnson is in the clubhouse on nine under.

Westwood said he was happy with his day's work, especially in such treacherous conditions.

"I played well and did not make many mistakes," he said.

"Once you are out of position on this course it can kill you. When I double-bogeyed the fourth I missed the fairway by a yard and could hardly see the ball."

Westwood birdied the first two holes and, despite a double bogey at the fourth, birdied the sixth and seventh.

After a three-hour storm delay he returned to pick up another shot and tie with Durant, who came home in 30.

Donald was just one of many who were unable to complete their second rounds on Saturday.

World number two Tiger Woods is on three under with eight to play, while world number four Phil Mickelson is a shot better off with nine to play.

Earlier on Saturday, Vijay Singh, the world number one, was in danger of missing the cut after twice driving into the lake at the 18th, his ninth, and running up a quadruple-bogey eight.

But he played the last eight holes in one under after the resumption to finish with a 74 for a two-round total of three under.

Ernie Els also had his problems, with a double bogey on the sixth, but recovered to card a second 71 and secure his place for the last two rounds at two under.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell notched five birdies in seven holes on the back nine to post a 66 and is well placed at seven under.
