Thunderstorms caused the second round of the Players Championship to be suspended with only 30 players managing to tee off at Sawgrass on Friday.
Play is due to resume at 1200 GMT on Saturday and it is likely the event will run into Monday.
Former US Open champion Steve Jones leads on eight under par, one stroke ahead of England's Lee Westwood and Americans Zach Johnson and Fred Funk.
The second round could start all over again on Saturday with preferred lies.
That would be good news for South Africa's Ernie Els, enabling him to wipe out the four strokes he has taken on the first already.
Vijay Singh was also on the first hole when the sirens sounded to bring the players back inside for the second time.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson (both two under) were still waiting to launch their bids.
The intention is for the halfway cut to remain at the top 70 and ties, although that could be reduced to 60 to fit in 36 holes on Sunday.
Tournament director Mark Russell said: "It's just too saturated out there. We can't play golf under the rules.
"We haven't got a very good forecast (for Saturday). Who knows what we could do. Maybe we will play 36 holes on Sunday."
Singh and Woods, ranked one and two in the world respectively, were among several who complained about mud on the ball in Thursday's first round.
And with soggy conditions expected to dominate, officials had to consider using "lift, clean and place" rules, although the round began without such measures and Russell intends to keep things that way.
But Russell would not rule out the possibility of wiping out the few scores posted Friday and restarting the second round under "lift, clean and place" conditions.
Seven of the 13 US Tour events this season have been affected by rain, wind or fog.
