World number one Vijay Singh has moved to within striking distance of joint third-round leaders Tom Lehman and Briny Baird at the Funai Classic.

Singh, one of four players on 14 under, made eight birdies to end the round three shots behind Lehman and Baird.

Scott Verplank is one shot behind the leading duo, while Cameron Beckman is also in contention.

"I've got a good chance but I need to make a few birdies to catch up," said Singh, who started in joint 28th place.

He added: "I played really well - drove the ball beautifully, hit some good iron shots and putted nicely as well."

Lehman hit a round of 67 to join overnight leader Briny Baird, who carded a 68, in a share of the lead.

"I feel like I was very calm on the golf course and very focused and played well and just made a couple too many mistakes," said Lehman.

South Africa's Tim Clark went round in 64, to join Singh, Mark Calcavecchia and Australia's Geoff Ogilvy in a tie for fifth.

But the top of the leaderboard is fairly congested with 20 players within five strokes of the leaders.

The tournament - where scoring is traditionally very low - was being played on two courses but is now being played on the Magnolia course only.
