Sweden's Carl Pettersson emerged as the early leader of the 133rd Open Championship on a cloudy opening day at Troon, moving to three-under-par after three holes.

England's Gary Evans, who started with Peter O'Malley and Brad Faxon, had set the early pace with an albatross at the par-five fourth but dropped a shot at the sixth as the pack caught up with him..

The first birdie of the day was claimed by Mark Calcavecchia, who lifted the Claret Jag here in 1989.

Other early starters included Ernie Els at 0758 and Colin Montgomerie at 0858.

0820: Petterson makes a steady start to move one shot clear of the field, on three-under-par after three holes.

0805: Early leader Evans claims an albatross at the par-five fourth but promptly drops a shot at the sixth to drop back to two-under for a share of the lead.

0736: Former Open champion David Duval has withdrawn, suffering from a bad back. His place playing alongside Pettersson and Craig Perks of New Zealand.

0725: England's Gary Evans moves to three under par, taking a two-shot lead over Americans Faxon, Rich Beem and Australian amateur Nick Flanagan.

0705: Mark Calcavecchia slips back to level par with a bogey five at the second hole, while Sandy Lyle makes a birdie at the first to join Brad Faxon and Barry Lane on one under par.

0650: Mark Calcavecchia, the 1989 Open champion, opens with a birdie in the second group.

0630: O'Malley is the first man to tee off at the the 370-yard, par four first. The Australian finds the left of the fairway with his drive.
