Scotland's Scott Drummond held his nerve to win the Volvo PGA Championship by two strokes from overnight leader Angel Cabrera at Wentworth.

Drummond equalled the tournament record with his final score of 19-under and birdied the final hole to seal the win as Cabrera's putt finished just short.

Sweden's Joakim Haeggman finished in third, while Nick Faldo, Darren Clarke and Anders Hansen were tied for fourth.

"I felt relaxed, I didn't look at the leaderboard at all," he told BBC Sport.

The world number 435, who was originally fourth reserve to get into the event, added: "I stayed focused, I wasn't thinking about pay-cheques or winning.

"It was quite surreal, it all felt good right from the word go.

"My putting was solid. I wanted to give every putt a good run at the hole."

It has given me a lot of confidence for the Open
Nick Faldo

Drummond's victory made him the first debutant to win at Wentworth since Arnold Palmer in 1975.

He hit a final round of 64 to overtake Cabrera's one-shot advantage and claim the 419,000 prize for his first win on the main European Tour.

The 30-year-old's victory guarantees him a five-year exemption on the European Tour as well as booking his place at the Open and an invite to the NEC Invitational.

Faldo took heart from his final round of 66 that had him in contention until the latter stages.

"That was good for me," said Faldo.

"It has given me a lot of confidence. Now I'm going to work on my game and get ready for the Open at Troon. That's my number one goal."
