American Brent Geiberger shot 67 to move into a one-stroke lead at the halfway mark of the Greensboro Classic.
Geiberger picked up five shots in his round, leaving him one clear of David Toms, Jeff Brehaut and Tom Pernice Jr.
Toms' seven-under 65 was matched by Jerry Kelly, who joined first-round leader Jason Dufner and three others one shot further back on nine under.
Britain's Justin Rose had been two shots off the lead but missed the cut after a 75 dropped him to two under.
And Luke Donald failed to make the cut by two shots on his return to the PGA Tour after a second-round 71.
