Campbell wins rookie battle
Campbell v Donald (USA won 5&3)

Luke Donald
American Chad Campbell gained the upper hand in the battle of the Ryder Cup debutants as he handed a 5&3 defeat to European wildcard Luke Donald.

The Texan shot into a five-hole lead after 12 as Englishman Donald failed to recapture his earlier form.

Campbell went ahead at the third with a par three which left the resurgent USA ahead in six of the first seven singles matches at that stage.

He never looked in danger after that and sealed victory on the 15th.

Campbell had failed to win any of his two previous matches but solid putting helped dispatch Donald.

Three birdies in five holes from the fourth put him in command and his opponent managed just one birdie in reply.
