Jesper Parnevik has jeopardised his chances of a Ryder Cup wildcard by pulling out of next week's BMW Open.
The Munich tournament was the Swede's last chance to impress European captain Bernhard Langer, who names his team to play the USA after the event.
Parnevik, who will instead attend a "company day" in Chicago, admitted Langer was "a little surprised" when he told him of his decision.
But he added: "I'm not sure the event is going to have a huge influence."
Parnevik is seeking his fourth successive Ryder Cup wildcard and admitted: "I'm neither
optimistic nor pessimistic - I'm neutral.
"I don't think anybody who needs a wildcard can be disappointed if they don't get one because
they haven't played themselves onto the team.
"I think the two wildcards are a lot more open than they have been for a lot of years. I reckon there are several guys in with a chance that you can make a
case for."
Parnevik is likely to face competition from Colin Montgomerie, Luke Donald, Freddie Jacobson and Alex Cejka.
Langer said Jesper Parnevik's decision to miss the BMW was probably a sign the Swede knew he wouldn't get a wildcard.
"I think he knows deep down he probably won't get picked," the German reasoned.
"I certainly have three or four guys who have been playing better over the last six to eight weeks. that I will probably go to, but I have not told him 'no'
yet."
The Ryder Cup takes place at Oakland Hills next month.
