Carl Pettersson fired a four-under 68 on Friday to open a three-shot lead after the second round of the Honda Classic in Florida.
The Swede continued the form which saw him shoot a course record on Thursday to build a convincing lead over Americans Brad Faxon and Todd Hamilton
"I'm glad I carried on from yesterday and felt like I played nearly just as good as yesterday," said Pettersson.
"I didn't make as many putts, but I felt really good."
Fredrik Jacobsen, another Swede, is alone in fourth place at 136, two shots ahead of a group of nine players that includes compatriot Jesper Parnevik.
Pettersson has made just one bogey in 36 holes to give him the first half-way lead since joining the PGA Tour.
Australia's Craig Parry came back from an opening-round 73 to shoot 68 but is 10 shots behind Pettersson.
Defending champion Justin Leonard avoided missing the cut by one shot, struggling to a 73 after a first-round 71.
Veteran Australian Greg Norman was disqualified after incorrectly playing a provisional tee shot at the 13th.
