Broadhurst secures Tour place
Paul Broadhurst
Broadhurst was almost scuppered by a giant leaf

Paul Broadhurst regained his place on the European Tour after shooting a final round of 66 at the qualifying school in Spain.

The former Ryder Cup player had started the day at Emporda in joint 36th place, with only the top 35 and ties being given cards for next year's circuit.

It was either a good score today or the Challenge Tour next year

But he kept his nerve to finish on 15 under - four shots inside the cut-off mark.

"In the circumstances I would say that's my best ever round," said Broadhurst.

"Winning my singles at the Ryder Cup [in 1991] does not even come close.

"It was either a good score today or the Challenge Tour next year. As a family man I can't really afford to do that."

Broadhurst had two nervy moments during his round, the first on the long 18th - his ninth - when his three-wood second missed going into the lake by inches.

The other was on the seventh green, when a giant leaf almost hit his ball as he was preparing to hit a 20-foot putt.

Per Nyman
Nyman saw off Archer to take top spot
Because of his visor he did not see it until the last minute and he nearly double-hit the ball.

Sweden's Per Nyman took the honour of finishing top of the class, carding a final round of 66 to end his campaign on 28 under.

Nyman was one shot clear of Warrington's Philip Archer, who had a final round of 71, and two ahead of Luton's Phil Golding.

Italian Marco Bernardini dropped four shots in the last three holes to miss out by two and Sweden's Peter Hanson did the same to come up three strokes short on eight under.

On the same mark were Cambridge's Russell Claydon and Welshman Mark Mouland.

Another former tour winner, Yorkshire's Stuart Cage, parred the last five holes for 10 under. One birdie in that stretch would have been good enough.

But there was success for amateurs Jan Are Larsen of Norway and Julien Clement of Switzerland.

And Somerset's David Dixon, who was leading amateur in the Open at Lytham last year, also qualified.
