The United States have beaten Europe at the Interlachen Country Club in Minnesota to take back the Solheim Cup.

Trailing 9-7 at the end of day two, the home side dominated Sunday's singles to avenge their defeat at Loch Lomond two years ago.

With two matches still to finish, the Americans had already accumulated the 14.5 points they needed to come out on top.

The winning moment came when Rosie Jones went dormie three up against Karine Icher in the final match.

The Americans eventually recorded a 15.5-12.5 victory.

Europe were attempting to win on US soil for the first time in the competition's history but now trail 5-2 overall.

Juli Inkster led the way for the Americans with an early 4&3 success over Raquel Carriedo.

But then Iben Tinning beat Kelli Kuehne 3&2 and Suzann Pettersen halved with Michelle Redman despite being five down with five holes to play to give Europe hope.

But they eventually ran out of steam.

US captain Patty Sheehan was naturally delighted with her players.

"These ladies have so much heart and guts," said Sheehan. "They put out every single ounce of effort they had today.

"I knew that two points behind wasn't too much to make up and Juli gave us the perfect start.

"I told her to go out there and get a point and she got the job done."

European captain Dale Reid, who led the side to victory two years ago, admitted: "The Americans played great, they were just too good on the day."

Singles results (US first):

Inkster bt Carriedo 4&3
Diaz bt Marti 5&3
