Romero denies Jacobson
Eduardo Romero
Romero was behind until the 17th hole

Argentina's Eduardo Romero clinched the Scottish Open after an extraordinary end to the final's day play in Loch Lomond.

Fredrik Jacobson, who had led since the second round, looked to be safely heading towards his maiden European Tour title when he ran into trouble at the 17th.

The Swede missed a relatively simple three-foot putt and Romero, who was only one shot behind, parred the final two holes to force a play-off at the 18th.

And it was the veteran Argentine who held his nerve, finding the green with his second shot and holing a seven-foot putt to confirm his win.

"I am so excited to have won the title," he said.

"I have been playing great all week and it is very important for me to win in Scotland as I regard it like Argentina as my home.

"The mountains and the lakes remind me of Argentina.... I would like to move here!"

There was little to separate Romero and Jacobson
At 47, he is the oldest ever winner of the Scottish Open and the third oldest player to win a European Tour title.

For Jacobson, it was another bitter disappointment and his sixth runner-up finish will be of little consolation.

Roger Chapman and South African Tim Clark finished joint third, Chapman after double-bogeying the 17th.

Justin Rose was a further shot back in fifth spot.

One clear

For much of the final day, the tournament appeared to be in Jacobson's control, especially when he survived a couple of anxious moment down the stretch.

The 27-year-old offset two birdies with two bogeys to retain his one-shot cushion with nine holes to play.

He birdied 11, bogeyed 13 and picked up another shot at the par-four 14th - where his tee shot landed on the green and bounced into the back fringe - to stay one in front with three holes remaining.

The Swede then twice flirted with disaster at the 490-yard 16th before running up a very fortunate par-four.

He benefitted from successive free drops after pulling his tee shot left into tractor marks in the rough and then hitting his second into a bank above a stream in front of the green.

But his luck ran out at the 17th and Romero was only too happy to take advantage.

Earlier, Colin Montgomerie finished the tournament in style as he closed with a five-under 66.
