Sluman takes control
Jeff Sluman hits his tee shot at the 17th
Jeff Sluman won the tournament in 1998

Jeff Sluman fired a bogey-free eight-under-par 63 to claim a two-shot lead after three rounds of the Greater Milwaukee Open.

The 41-year-old American has won five PGA Tour events in his career, including the 1998 Greater Milwaukee Open.

And he gave himself a great chance of repeating the feat with four birdies on the front nine and four more after the turn as he took his score to 20 under after 54 holes.

Steve Lowery moved up to second thanks to a 64.

Kirk Triplett, co-leader at the halfway stage alongside Sluman and Tommy Armour, is another two shots back in third after a 67.

Lowest round

Greg Chalmers and Tim Herron both enjoyed 65s to move up to 15 under and 14 under respectively.

J P Hayes matched Sluman for the lowest round of the day.

His 63 moved him up to a share of sixth on 13 under alongside David Peoples, who carded a second successive 67.

Armour's challenge looks to have come to an end after he struggled to a level-par 71 on day three to lie on 12 under.

Third-round leaderboard from the Greater Milwaukee Open (GB unless stated):

20 under - Jeff Sluman (US)
18 under - Steve Lowery (US)
16 under - Kirk Triplett (US)
15 under - Greg Chalmers (Aus)
14 under - Tim Herron (US)
