Armour takes surprise lead
Tommy Armour III has a oneshot lead after the first round
Tommy Armour III has not won in over 12 years

Tommy Armour III carded an eight-under-par 63 to open a one-shot lead over a quartet of players after the first round of the Greater Milwaukee Open.

With just one top 10 finish this year, the 42-year-old ranks 138th on the money list and is in danger of losing his Tour card.

He only retained it last year at qualifying school.

He has missed the cut in nine of 18 events in 2002 and tied for 53rd at the Western Open last week.

But he took advantage of the absence of most of the top players to turn in a bogey-free round at the Brown Deer Park golf club.

He will have to play well to stay ahead though, with nine players within two shots of the lead.

Kenny Perry, rookie Bo Van Pelt, Deane Pappas and Jeff Sluman are tied for second.

Scott Hoch, who won the event in 1995 and 1997, is the top-ranked player in the field but is only 27th.

Hoch opened with a two-under-par 69 that left him tied for 49th place.

First round leaderboard:

8 under: Tommy Armour III
7 under: Deane Pappas, Kenny Perry, Jeff Sluman and Bo Van Pelt
6 under: Kelly Gibson, Shigeki Maruyama, Bryce Molder, Steve Stricker
5 under: Chad Campbell, Glen Day, Brent Geiberger, David Gossett, Mike Heinen, Bradley Hughes, Steve Lowery, David Peoples, Mike Springer, Kirk Triplett, John Turcott, D A Weibring
