Kim surges clear
Kim has kept her cool to move into the lead
Mi Hyun Kim of South Korea fired a five-under-par 67 to open a five-shot lead at the Wegmans Rochester.
The 25-year-old Kim was the 1999 LPGA Rookie of the Year but has not won since the 2000 Safeway Championship. But she is closing in ending her victory drought after moving clear of rival Karrie Webb. "Today, my shots were going straight," said Kim, who has three top-five finishes this season. "I have confidence every time, and my feeling is I can make every putt."
Kim had four birdies on the front nine and bounced back from a bogey at the 13th with birdies on 16 and 17 to finish with a three-round score of 13-under 203. Webb, who is trying to end a drought of her own, shot a 72 and finished at 208. The 27-year-old Webb has 26 wins on the LPGA Tour, but has not won in her last 17 starts. She said: "I'm five shots behind. I have to play well or I don't have a chance. I just didn't do it today." Defending champion Laura Davies of England shot a 69 and is six strokes back at 209. Rookie Candie Kung notched the third hole-in-one of the tournament and the second at the ninth hole, a 145-yard par three. Becky Iverson and Leta Lindley achieved the feat on the first day.
